UMBERTO ECO'S PIEDMONT
Activity description
Following in the footsteps of Umberto Eco in Piedmont means embarking on a journey through memory, culture and territory, through his acute, ironic and profoundly human gaze: an itinerary that tells the story of the man behind the thinker, the narrator behind the philosopher.
From Alessandria, his beloved hometown, then Nizza Monferrato to Turin, the city of studies and where he was a semiologist, philosopher, writer, and undisputed protagonist of the history of contemporary culture.
The final stop is the Sacra di San Michele, an abbey symbol of Piedmont that dominates the Val di Susa, and whose architecture inspired the setting of the novel “The Name of the Rose”.

Alternatively and depending on the opening days, visit the Officina della Scrittura, the first museum in the world that celebrates the Sign in all its forms. A fascinating journey through the birth and evolution of writing, an extraordinary tool of expression and communication. And a visit to the Aurora factory, the first Italian industry for the production of tank pens founded in 1919.
Dinner in a restaurant in the center and overnight stay.
Day 5
Transfer to Chiusa di San Michele, near Avigliana. The Sacra di San Michele, the symbolic place of Piedmont, inspired the literary construction of the abbey which, at the end of 1327, hosted the young monk Adso da Melk, and his teacher William of Baskerville in the international best-selling novel The Name of the Rose. The historical crime novel combines semiotics with fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory and has been translated into 47 languages, with thirty million copies sold.
The abbey defies the principles of physics and dominates the top of Mount Pirchiriano, at the entrance to the Susa Valley: A wonderful place full of spirituality, originally guarded by Benedictine monks and which since 1837 has been entrusted to the Rosminian fathers.
Guided tour of the Abbey, with the imposing Staircase of the Dead, the Portal of the Zodiac, the Church, the panoramic terrace and the Ruins of the Monastery New
