Sacra di San Michele
Stories and Trekking on the Via Francigena
From Turin to the nearby Susa Valley, on the ancient road to France, you can admire an amazing building, constructed on top of a mountain at an altitude of one thousand meters. It is the famous Sacra di San Michele, the abbey built between 983 and 987 on the summit of Mount Pirchiriano.
The abbey is the symbol of Piedmont. Accompanied by a guide along one of the most famous trails, we set off on a relatively easy trek along the well-known “path of princes,” a dirt road with a couple of climbs and an elevation gain of almost 300 meters, leading to the square that then leads to the sanctuary.
This is where you begin your tour of the entire architectural complex, from the first Romanesque church to the 1800s restoration, including the famous staircase of the dead and the zodiac portal. Located along a medieval pilgrimage route called the Via Francigena, the abbey became incredibly vast and powerful until 1200.
Next to the monastery’s beautiful buildings, the view from the panoramic terrace encompasses both the Alps and the Susa Valley to the west, as well as the plain towards Turin to the east. The experience continues with a refreshing lunch featuring typical products from the Susa Valley.
Individual participation fee with a minimum of 2 paying participants: €159.00. The fee includes: private guide in your language, admission to the sacred site, lunch at a farmhouse, medical insurance.
